Teriyaki Tofu Bowl

If you are looking for a simple and easy recipe packed full of plant protein, this one’s for you! This Teriyaki Tofu Bowl is sweet yet savory and oh so flavorful. Pair this tofu with rice, noodles, or additional stir fried veggies for a complete meal. 

PRESSING YOUR TOFU

For this recipe it is very important that you use pressed tofu. In order to get the tofu crispy on the outside you don’t want a ton of moisture in your tofu. 

To press my tofu I simply removed it from the package and drained the water. Then place a clean kitchen towel or a couple paper towels down on a large plate. Next, put something heavy on top of the tofu, I like to stack 2 ceramic bowls on top of one another. Just make sure not to put too much weight on the tofu, otherwise the tofu will crack. 

Let the bowls sit on the tofu for 15-20 minutes letting the tofu release all of the extra moisture. You will  be surprised at how much liquid will actually come out of the tofu. 

Cut your pressed tofu into 1 inch by 1 inch cubes. If you want crispier tofu cut the tofu into smaller pieces. 

In a large bowl combine all of the tofu ingredients together. Arrange the tofu evenly on the baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the tofu is crispy.

While your tofu is baking you are going to cook your vegetables. For this bowl I used onions and pepper. However, you can use whatever type of vegetable that you have on hand.

INGREDIENT SWAPS

Here are some ingredients that you can swap out with what you already have in your pantry. 

You can also easily make this recipe gluten-free by substituting specific ingredients as well. Just make sure to double check the back of the labels to make sure they do not include wheat.

CORNSTARCH– The cornstarch gets the tofu nice and crispy when baking. If you do not have cornstarch you can use arrowroot powder instead. It is very similar and will make your tofu crispy when baking as well. 

CAYENNE PEPPER – Crushed red pepper or sriracha sauce. You can add more or less depending on how spicy you want it. 

GARLIC POWDER– Swap garlic powder for fresh minced garlic. Just make sure to really chop up the pieces really small so when you eat the tofu you don’t get large amounts of garlic. 

AVOCADO OIL- Use any other type of high heat oil that you have on hand instead of avocado oil to toss your tofu in.

I paired my Teriyaki Tofu Bowls with rice and garnished it with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. However, the options of sides and garnishes are endless.

Teriyaki Tofu Bowls

  • Servings: 3

Tofu

  • 1 Tbsp neutral oil, I used avocado
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp tamari, gluten-free (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 package of extra firm or high protein tofu, pressed with the water removed.

Teriyaki Sauce

  • ¼ cup Primal Kitchen No Soy Teriyaki Sauce and Marinade, add more for a saucier tofu
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

Vegetables

  • 1 tsp neutral oil, I used avocado oil
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ½ large red onion, sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 orange bell pepper, sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 C) . Line a large baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Cut your pressed tofu into 1 inch by 1 inch cubes. In a large bowl combine all of the tofu ingredients together. Toss until the tofu is completely covered with the ingredients. Arrange the tofu evenly on the baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the tofu is crispy.
  3. Meanwhile, heat a pan on medium heat. Add the garlic powder, ground ginger, salt, pepper, onions, peppers, and cook for 5-6 minutes or until the onion and peppers are soft.
  4. Add the baked tofu, teriyaki sauce, and cayenne pepper to the pan. Mix until the tofu is completely covered in sauce.
  5. Serve with your choice of grain and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

Make it Your Own

  • Get creative and use any type of vegetables that you have in your refrigerator. The cooking time just might differ depending on what vegetables you use.
  • Pair your teriyaki tofu with white rice, brown rice, quinoa, or rice noodles.
  • Like spicy food but don’t have cayenne pepper? Substitute it with crushed red pepper.
