Mains Recipe

Vegan BLT

This post is sponsored by Yondu. All opinions are my own.

This sandwich is like a BLT but better in every way. Instead of bacon we are using a savory, thinly sliced tempeh. Instead of no avocado, we are adding lots of avocado. Put it altogether and add some mayo and might have a new favorite sandwich.

VEGAN TEMPEH INGREDIENTS

Soy sauce or tamari- You can use either soy sauce or tamari for this recipe. This ingredient really brings out the salty flavor that you might like in bacon.

Yondu- I love using the product for its savory umami flavor. For a bolder flavor add an additional half teaspoon.

Maple Syrup- It adds a little sweetness to the tempeh. You can substitute this ingredient with agave syrup.

Liquid Smoke- You can find this ingredient in most grocery stores. It really gives the tempeh that smoky flavor without actually putting into a smoker.

One of the key ingredients that makes this tempeh super savory is the Yondu sauce that I added. What exactly is Yondu? Yondu is a vegetable umami sauce made from triple-fermented beans and umami-rich vegetables. It is 100% natural, organic, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO with no added flavors or preservatives which I love.

Yondu is a great way to build flavor fast and is a great sauce to add to different types of dishes. I also like to use it as a vegan fish sauce alternative in my stir frys and noodle dishes.

Interested in trying this sauce? Order your own bottle here. You can also get 20% off by using 20itsallgood on Amazon.

To make your savory tempeh preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (176 C). Line a baking pan with parchment paper and set aside. Combine the soy sauce, yondu, maple syrup, and liquid smoke in a large bowl and whisk.

Add the tempeh to the bowl and gently toss the tempeh, covering each piece with sauce. You can also cover the pieces using a basting brush. Just be cautious when you add the sauce to the tempeh because the tempeh can easily crumble during this step.

After the pieces are covered in the sauce evenly spread the tempeh pieces on the parchment paper. Just make sure they do not overlap. Bake for 10 minutes, flip, and bake for an additional 10 minutes. For a crispier tempeh bake for 15 minutes on each side.

You can get super creative with what  you add on your Sandwich.

Below are some tasty toppings I recommend:

CUCUMBERS
ONIONS
SPINACH
PICKLES
SPROUTS

Vegan BLT Sandwich

  • Servings: 3 sandwiches
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

This sandwich is like a BLT but better in every way. Instead of bacon we are using a savory, thinly sliced tempeh. Instead of no avocado, we are adding lots of avocado. Put it altogether and add some mayo and might have a new favorite sandwich.

Tempeh “Bacon”

  • 1 (8 ounce) package of tempeh, thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbsp Yondu
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/2 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke

Sandwich

  • 3 hamburger buns
  • 1 large tomato, sliced thinly
  • 1 avocado, skin removed, pitted, and sliced thinly
  • 3 pieces of lettuce, chopped
  • 3 Tbsp mayonnaise, vegan

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (176 C). Line a baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Combine the soy sauce, yondu, maple syrup, and liquid smoke in a large bowl and whisk. Add the tempeh to the bowl and gently toss the tempeh, covering each piece with sauce.
  3. Evenly arrange the tempeh pieces on the pan, making sure they are not touching. Bake for 10 minutes, flip, and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  4. Assemble your sandwich layering a slice of bread, tempeh, avocado, tomato, lettuce, mayo, and bread. Repeat until you have made all sandwiches.
  5. Leftover Vegan BLT Sandwiches will last wrapped up for 2-3 days, not assembled. If you have assembled your sandwich with the bread I recommend eating it that day, otherwise it will get soggy.

Make it Your Own

  • Have leftover tempeh “bacon” marinade? Brush the sauce over the tempeh during the baking process.
  • Not a fan of mayo? Substitute the mayo for any other spread.
  • Looking for a crispier tempeh? Bake your tempeh for 15 minutes on each side.
  • You can also fry your tempeh slices instead of baking. To fry them, heat your pan on medium heat. Once hot, add a half teaspoon of oil. Fry your tempeh slices for 3 minutes on each side.
